During the last three decades Colombia has been submitted to many international tests assesing the quality of education, including those known as PISA, TIMSS, PIRLS and LIECE in all these test the result have been negative.The situation is more serious when you consider that there is no significant improvement from 1996 when we first introduced in TIMSS and 2012 last made PISA assesments.
Why are so low results in all these test and our owm internal assessments-now known as SABER, ICFES historically called evidence?The answer is simple; they are very low because theses test asess aspects that Colombia isn't working yet in the vast majority of educational institutions.
as PISA test assess critical reading, problem solving and how young people use scientific concepts in their daily lives.In Colombia rather than develp essential communication skills for the such as read, write or develop coherent oral discourses, we continue the emphasis on things so impertinent for children as grammar and spelling.It is absurd that the Colombian education continues dedicated to supply information which most students easily found on the net. It is incomprehensible that we use so long to teach algorithms that today can do in seconds with the help of a calculator. It is unfortunate that we continue dedicated to remenbering the chemical symbols that best serve to fill solving crossword puzzles and tests chemistry teachers.
